2008 August > Gear Review With the price of gas so high, and only going up, I wanted to check out a bike store. They say that peddle power is huge in Ottawa and it doesn't matter that it is a very healthy mode of transportation. I found Fresh Air Experience at 1291 Wellington. Not only were the staff friendly and helpful, but each staff member is a racer and owns at least a couple of bikes (we're talking $2000+ each), so you know you'll be talking to some one with experience. They've been around for 30 years now. Here's a few gems I found:
| Dahon CIA0 P8 is the fold and go of bikes. Pack it into a bag like a brief case. Our aging population likes the balance. Retails for $930 |
| |
| Transend by Giant is for the city commuter. It's less expensive and lighter. Retails between $350 - $600 |
| |
| The "Cougar", Chariot X-Country Series connects to a bike, jog with it, use it as a stroller or cross country ski. Retails at $500 and up |
| |
| Here's a rack of repair tools for the do-it-yourselfer. You name it, they have it |
| |
| I caught up with the head mechanic Vic (front), Brent (right), Meg and Graham doing some repairs downstairs |
| |
| Triathlon racing is growing in Ottawa. Here we have the Orbea (tour du france) bike for $3,000, the Giro helmet $150, Craft triathlon suit $100 and the "Batman" Zoot suit that retails for $700 |
| |
| Gaint TCR0 $4,000, cycle clothing from $60 up, Bell helmet $130 and cycling shoes $100 |
| |
| Fresh Air Experience repairs approximately 80 bikes a week |
